Dark Twang: Embracing Y’Allternative Fashion with Katakomb Clothing

Ever since I can remember, my dad played pedal steel guitar. Through him, I was exposed to old-school country as a little girl; Johnny Cash, Glen Sherley, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and of course, our Queen Dolly Parton. Their voices became the soundtrack of my early childhood, filled with twangy melodies and heartfelt storytelling. But as I got older, I found myself drawn to subcultures with a darker aesthetic; goth, punk, alternative. For a long time, these two worlds felt like they could never mix. Country was all about rhinestones and cowboy boots, while alternative fashion leaned towards black lace and combat boots.

My dad doing what he loves best, playing pedal steel guitar.

Enter Y’Allternative fashion.

Y’allternative is where country roots meet alternative edge, blending Western influences with goth, punk, and grunge aesthetics. Think cowboy boots with fishnet tights, black leather jackets over fringe dresses and western wear with a touch of the macabre. It’s a style that takes the grit and soul of classic country and fuses it with the rebellious, non-conforming attitude of alternative fashion.

A perfect example? The June Dress from Katakomb Clothing. I’m wearing the skater version which has an A-line skirt but it’s also available as a curve hugging pencil dress style (in various colour ways). I paired it with fishnet tights, black and white cowboy boots from Torrid and of course a black cowboy hat.

Whether you’re line dancing in a haunted honky tonk or heading to a goth night with a little twang in your step, this look is all about mixing the best of both worlds. And there’s nothing more alternative than that in my opinion.

Our friends at Lucky Star Saloon provided the perfect backdrop to shoot this look. Gary and I had a blast snapping away at this amazing place, there is something new to see each time I visit!
